What the 2025 Act covers
The Act extends across India and also applies to online money gaming services offered into India from outside the country. It defines an online money game by the payment of fees, money or other stakes in expectation of monetary or other enrichment, whether the game is based on skill, chance or both.
What changed on 1 May 2026
The commencement notification made the Act effective on 1 May 2026. The 2026 rules and the Online Gaming Authority of India created the operational framework for classification and registration. Older articles that discuss only a short list of restricted states do not describe the full current position.
Online social games are a separate category
An online social game does not involve staking money or other stakes with an expectation of monetary gain. It may charge a subscription or one-time access fee only when that payment is access pricing rather than a stake or wager. The actual product flow matters more than the word Teen Patti in the title.
Why bonus and withdrawal pages need extra caution
A page promising a deposit bonus, cash withdrawal or instant UPI payout describes money-flow features that deserve a current classification check. A working APK link or a successful installation shows only technical availability; it does not establish the status of a money game or its payment service.
